NFL Key Numbers: Why 3 and 7 Matter
A quick explanation of NFL key numbers and why spreads around 3 and 7 deserve extra attention.
Not every point on an NFL spread is equal
NFL games finish on some margins more often than others. The two numbers bettors talk about most are 3 and 7.
Why 3 and 7?
A field goal is worth 3 points. A touchdown plus the extra point is worth 7. Because football scoring repeatedly uses those building blocks, final margins cluster around them.
That makes a move through 3 or 7 more important than the same-sized move through many other numbers.

-2.5 → WIN at a 3-point margin. -3 → PUSH. -3.5 → LOSS.
The simplest example
Favorite -2.5, wins by 3 = WIN
Favorite -3, wins by 3 = PUSH
Favorite -3.5, wins by 3 = LOSS
The opinion on the team never changed. The number changed.
What key numbers do not tell you
They do not tell you which team to bet. They tell you that some points on the spread have more settlement importance than others.
Why this matters for Lookahead markets
An early +3.5 that later becomes +3 is not cosmetic. A Lookahead number that crosses a key margin can materially change the position available.
