Spread Movement vs. Price Movement in NFL Betting

A sportsbook can change the point spread, the attached price, or both. These changes affect a quote in different ways.

Direct answer

Spread movement changes the scoring handicap. Price movement changes the cost attached to the same handicap. Both are line movement, but they do not describe the same change.

Spread movement

Earlier: Team A +3.5 (-110)

Later: Team A +3 (-110)

The price stayed -110 while the underdog moved from receiving 3.5 points to receiving 3. A three-point loss changes from a win to a push.

+2.5

Team loses by 3

+3.5 = WIN+3 = PUSH+2.5 = LOSS

+3 (-105) → +3 (-115)

The number can move. The price can move. Sometimes both move.

Price movement

Earlier: Team A +3 (-105)

Later: Team A +3 (-115)

The team still receives 3 points. The cost changed. If the goal is $100 in profit, the later quote requires $10 more at risk.

Common mistake

Do not compare an earlier quote at one sportsbook with a later quote at another and call it same-book movement. Keep sportsbook, selection, spread, attached price and observation time together.
