NFL Opening Line vs. Current Line vs. Closing Line
A quick guide to the three reference points bettors use to describe an NFL spread from first posting through kickoff.
One game can have several important numbers
Opening line: +3.5
Current line: +3
Closing line: +2.5
All three can describe the same game at different moments.
Opening line
The opening line is the first widely available price for the market. For some NFL games, an earlier Lookahead number may appear before the standard game-week opener.
Current line
The current line is what is available now. It reflects the market after information and wagering have arrived since the opener.
Closing line
The closing line is the final market price immediately before the game starts.

The number can move. The price can move. Sometimes both move.
Why the path matters
If a team was +3.5, then +3, then +2.5, the game did not change. The available position changed. A final margin of 3 would produce three different spread results.
You can't bet yesterday's line today.
What movement does not tell you
The path does not automatically reveal sharp money, guarantee a result or tell you what to bet. It tells you something factual: the market repriced the game.
