First Observed vs. Opening Line: What Is the Difference?
First Observed by SharpFish is the earliest eligible quote SharpFish retained. It is not automatically a sportsbook’s original opening line.
Direct answer
FIRST OBSERVED BY SHARPFISH means the earliest eligible quote SharpFish retained for that sportsbook, game, market and selection. It does not prove that the quote was the sportsbook’s original opener.

Sportsbook first posts: time not established
SharpFish first observes: Team A -3 (-110) at 10:02 AM
Later SharpFish observation: Team A -2.5 (-115) at 4:01 PM
The supported statement is that SharpFish first observed -3 (-110) at 10:02 AM and later observed -2.5 (-115) at 4:01 PM. Calling the first retained quote the opener would add a fact the evidence does not establish.

The number can move. The price can move. Sometimes both move.
Why it matters
Precise labels keep market history honest. They also prevent a later snapshot from being presented as though it captured the first price a sportsbook ever posted.
Common mistake
Do not remove the sportsbook or timestamp from the comparison. Movement requires the same book, game, market and selection observed at two different times.
