NFL Odds Timestamps Explained: When Was This Price Observed?

An NFL odds timestamp identifies when a quote was updated, received or observed. Readers must know which clock a label represents before comparing prices.

Direct answer

An NFL odds timestamp tells you when a price was updated, received or observed. The label must identify which event the clock represents; otherwise two times can look comparable when they are not.

Show me

11:59:40 AM ET — sportsbook market last updated

12:00:01 PM ET — SharpFish request initiated

12:00:02 PM ET — source response received

12:04 PM ET — reader opens the page

The quote is tied to the source update and observation sequence. The page-view time does not rewrite the quote’s history.

Fresh Quote vs. Stale Quote Comparison

Fresh

10:12 AM

Book A +2.5 (-110)

Recently verified

Stale

10:02 AM

Book A +3 (-105)

No longer verified as current

A better-looking quote is not useful if the market has already moved away from it.

The clocks answer different questions

  • Bookmaker or market update time: when the source says the quote changed.
  • Observation or request time: when SharpFish asked for and retained the market.
  • Response time: when the source response arrived.
  • Page-view time: when a reader looked at the rendered page.

Compare the full quote

A useful comparison keeps game, sportsbook, market, period, selection, spread or total, attached price and timestamp together. Comparing only the point value can hide a price change; comparing only time can mix different books.

First observed is a separate label

“First observed by SharpFish” means the earliest governed SharpFish record for that defined quote. It does not automatically mean sportsbook opener or market opener.

Common mistake

Do not assume the newest timestamp guarantees availability or the oldest timestamp proves a stale quote. Availability and freshness need separate verification.
